Pulmonary HypertensionThe Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular
Diseases Unit is currently involved in a variety of projects examining
the underlying causes, appropriate investigation and optimal management
of patients with pulmonary vascular disease. We work closely with
national and international collaborators to ensure that our patients
have the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the most
up-to-date treatment of this condition.
Current projects include:
- The investigation of non-invasive blood
markers (BNP) of disease severity and their response to therapy in
Pulmonary Hypertension.
- The investigation of patterns of
ventilation in Pulmonary Hypertension utilising Helium MRI scanning.
- Electrocardiographic markers of disease
severity in Pulmonary Hypertension.
- The role of structured exercising training
in patients with Pulmonary Hypertension.
- UK National Audit of treatment and
outcomes in patients with pulmonary hypertension associated with
Connective Tissue Disease or Thromboembolic Disease.
- Multi-centre clinical trials of novel
agents in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension including:
- The long acting PDE-5 inhibitor, Tadalafil
- Nebulised Iloprost in combination with Sildenafil
- Nebulised Treprostinil
All research is conducted under
the guidance of the Sheffield Ethics Committee in concordance with Good
Clinical Practice guidelines. Patients attending the service may be
invited to take part in such studies were appropriate.
