Cystic Fibrosis

The Sheffield Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit, though relatively small has an active track record of publication in infection, diabetes and pregnancy in CF. We have taken part in Phase II clinical trials of novel compounds for use in CF designed to address the basic defect (desiccated sol layer of the airway epithelium), in CF Trust multicentre studies (CF WISE, TOPIC) and are looking to participate in Phase III trials of inhaled antibiotics and mucolytics during 2007. Every team member is encouraged to get involved in research and publish work done for e.g. MSc degrees. The CF Fellow, whilst providing much of the clinical service, is also encouraged to coordinate research within the team, embark on research of his/ her own and work to a higher degree if required. Dr Martin Wildman has recently joinied the CF Unit as a second consultant and we look forward to using his expertise as a previous MRC Training Fellow to further enhance our research efforts.
